This photograph of a male leopard climbing down a tree was made in the Maasai Mara. The light that evening felt unusual. Soft sun still touched the trunk and the cat, yet a deep stormy sky built behind them. As a result, his golden coat seemed to shine even more strongly.

The leopard had spent time resting high in the branches, watching the plains. Then he spotted a small group of reedbuck moving through the tall grass below. Immediately his focus changed. First he shifted his weight forward. Then, with complete confidence, he started his descent.

In this frame the male leopard climbing down a tree flows along the trunk with effortless grace. His front paws reach down, claws finding grip. His back legs follow in a smooth line. Even in this steep position he looks calm and in control, already thinking about the hunt that waits on the ground.
