Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of Coming Down from the Ridge male leopard in Kenya was taken on the same stormy evening as the other ridge images. After watching the plains from several mounds, the leopard finally left his lookout and began to move down the slope. The wind still pushed across the grass, and the deep blue‑grey sky hung over the Maasai Mara.

Coming Down

Instead of stalking low, the African leopard coming down from a ridge walked more openly now. His body relaxed a little as he stepped down from the slope, weaving between rocks and tufts of grass. Behind him the horizon stayed dark and heavy, but the foreground softened into gentle greens. It felt like a quiet pause between the tension of the hunt and whatever might come next.

From our position we could see his full profile against the stormy sky. The curve of the ridge, the scattered rocks and the soft blur of the foreground all led the eye towards him as he descended. I pressed the shutter when his body lined up with the clean band of blue above the hill, because that moment showed both his strength and the calm, steady rhythm of his movement.
