Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of a male African leopard lying in the dust in South Luangwa, Zambia, was made in the cool of the evening. I found him lying in the dust at the edge of the bush, his body relaxed yet his eyes wide awake. The background fell away into soft browns and greys, so every whisker and rosette stood out clearly against the earth.

He hardly moved, only shifting his paws now and then and turning his head to follow distant sounds. His steady gaze fixed ahead carried a quiet strength, as if he owned this stretch of woodland and needed only to watch over it.

I stayed back and let the scene unfold. The bush behind him melted into soft focus, wrapping him in a gentle, earthy tone. I pressed the shutter when he turned slightly towards me, whiskers catching the last light and his relaxed posture filling the frame. In that moment he seemed both powerful and utterly peaceful, a quiet guardian of the Luangua river.
