Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of Edge of the Plains male leopard in Kenya was made in the Maasai Mara late in the afternoon. We had followed him from a line of bushes out onto the more open grasslands. After weaving through the taller stems for a while, an african leopard resting on a mound climbed onto a low, grassy rise and settled there as if it were his own lookout post.

From this slightly higher ground he could see across the plains. The light softened and the background turned into a smooth wash of green, so his shape stood out clearly against the land. Every now and then he lifted his head, first to listen for alarm calls and then to scan the distance for movement. Although his body looked relaxed, his eyes and ears stayed sharp.

We kept a respectful distance and watched as he drifted between rest and attention. At one point he turned his head to follow a sound that we could not hear. I pressed the shutter then, wanting to show both his stillness and his connection to the wide country below him. In that moment, he felt like the quiet owner of the plains.
