Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of Stormlight Watch male leopard in Kenya was taken in the Maasai Mara near the end of the day. We had already spent time with him on a different mound, where he lay watching the plains in soft light. Then the wind shifted and heavy clouds rolled in from the horizon. As the mood changed, he rose, stretched and walked calmly to the next, slightly higher mound.

Special light

At that moment the light did something special. The sun broke through a gap in the clouds and poured warm evening colour over the leopard and the grass around him. Behind him, however, the sky turned a deep, stormy blue. The contrast between the glowing coat and the dark sky made him stand out like a carved figure on the ridge.

He paused, looked back over his shoulder and checked the land one more time. The tall grass moved in the wind, and the air felt charged but quiet. I pressed the shutter while he held that pose, wanting to capture both his strength and the drama of the storm arriving. A few minutes later the light faded and the first drops of rain began to fall.
