Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of Storm Ridge Stalker male leopard in Kenya was taken later in the same evening as the other ridge images. By this time the wind had strengthened and the dark storm sky had settled over the Maasai Mara. The leopard had already watched the plains and shifted between several lookouts. Now he had chosen his direction.

Stalking

He lowered his body and began to stalk along the ridge. The grass bent in the wind, yet he moved with slow, deliberate steps, keeping his shoulders level and his head pushed forward. Somewhere ahead, out of sight to us, impalas grazed on the slope. The African leopard stalking through the grass used every tuft, rock and shrub as cover, pausing often to listen and then gliding quietly on.

From our angle he appeared almost cut out against the deep blue‑grey sky. The contrast between his warm coat and the cool storm light made him stand out clearly, even though his movements stayed incredibly controlled. I pressed the shutter as he passed behind a small shrub, because the frame showed both his careful posture and the wide, moody sky that wrapped around the scene. It felt like the most intense part of the evening: the patient closing of the distance before any rush or chase.
