Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph shows an african leopard standing in tall grass on a quiet morning in Khwai, Botswana. Earlier in the season, heavy rain had turned the floodplain into a sea of pale seed heads, so the whole landscape felt soft and muted.

We were following her trail along the edge of the grasses when she suddenly stepped into the open. Then she stopped, perfectly still, as if she had grown from the field itself. Local guides knew her as Matsebe, a strong, experienced female who had raised many cubs in this part of the Okavango Delta.

Queen of Khwai

On this particular day she was in no hurry. Instead, she stood quietly and listened to the hidden sounds around her. Her body faced forward while her head turned slightly, first to one side and then to the other, reading both the wind and the faint rustle of unseen animals. In that moment she truly felt like an african leopard standing in tall grass, ruling her small piece of the floodplain with calm confidence.

From our position she almost disappeared into the grasses. The delicate stems blurred together, and only the curve of her back and the pattern of rosettes separated her from the field. Because the mood was so gentle, I chose to frame the image wide and let the grasses fill most of the scene. In the end, the photograph became both a portrait of a well known leopard in Khwai Botswana and a quiet study of the delta itself.
