Description
Queen of Khwai
Story Behind The Photograph
This image of Matsebe, often called the queen of Khwai, was made on the edge of the Okavango Delta. We had followed her tracks through the morning until she climbed onto a fallen tree that rose from the grass. From this small lookout, an african leopard standing on a fallen tree could see across the swamps and listen for any sound of movement.
Matsebe was a legend in this part of Botswana. Guides and photographers knew her as a powerful resident female who held this territory for many years, produced litter after litter and successfully raised a remarkable number of cubs. As she stood on the log that day, the long grass brushed her legs, and the deep green of the delta formed a soft backdrop behind her.
She lifted her head and tested the wind, eyes focused on the reeds where antelope sometimes stepped out to graze. The pose was both powerful and relaxed: one paw braced on the wood, muscles loose but ready, whiskers catching the light. I pressed the shutter while this african leopard standing on a fallen tree looked out over the swamps, wanting to capture not just a leopard in the Okavango Delta, but a ruler surveying her kingdom.
Some time later, news spread that Matsebe had passed on. This photograph has become, for me, a way to remember her presence and the many young leopards she left behind in Khwai.

About This Artwork
African Leopard Standing On A Fallen Tree is a leopard fine art photo print that celebrates strength, grace and legacy. The composition places Matsebe high on the fallen tree, framed by warm golden grass in the foreground and rich green delta bush behind. Her spotted coat stands out clearly, yet she still feels part of the landscape she ruled for so long.
On the wall, the mix of warm and cool tones works beautifully in natural, earthy interiors. The image reads as both portrait and landscape: you see Matsebe first, but then your eye moves into the depth of the Okavango behind her. It suits living rooms, offices, hallways and safari lodges where you want a strong statement piece of leopard wall art. For collectors who love Okavango Delta leopard stories, this african leopard standing on a fallen tree offers a lasting tribute to a famous female and to the wild place she called home.
