Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of Wind Before the Hunt male leopard in Kenya was taken just after he left the mound where he had been resting. Storm clouds were building over the Maasai Mara and the air felt different. As the wind began to pick up, an african leopard walking through grass stepped down from his lookout and moved out into the open plains.

Search Mode – African Leopard Walking Through Grass

His whole posture changed. Instead of lying tall and relaxed, the African leopard walking through grass moved with his head low and his body stretched forward. The long grass bent and swirled around his legs, yet he kept a steady, silent pace. Every few steps he paused to listen, then continued along a line only he could sense. It was clear that the male leopard hunting in grass had now fully switched into search mode.

We followed at a distance, careful not to disturb him. The background blurred into soft green and blue while his rosetted coat stayed sharp and detailed. I pressed the shutter when he passed through a slightly clearer patch of grass, tail curved and eyes fixed ahead. In that moment, he felt completely connected to the land and to the approaching weather.
