Story Behind The Photograph – Lush Greens In Tarangire

I made this image in Tarangire, Tanzania, during a time when the grass and flowers were especially lush. After months of watching elephants search for dry stems elsewhere, it was a joy to see them feeding in such rich, green growth. The herd spread out through the vegetation, pulling up mouthfuls and stripping branches with easy, swinging movements.

One calf in particular seemed delighted with the abundance. Instead of simply eating, this baby elephant playing with food grabbed a thick spray of leaves and tossed it over his head. Green stems draped across his back and shoulders, while another clump hung from his trunk. The whole scene felt light and playful, as if he was celebrating the feast as much as feeding on it.

Joyful Feeding And Playful Gesture

What I love here is the expression of pure enjoyment. The calf’s eye is soft but bright, his ears relaxed, and his body leans into the movement. The pose suggests both appetite and play, with the trunk curled high and the leaves caught mid‑swing.

Around him, the grass glows with rich greens, and darker tree trunks in the background add depth. Because the colours are so vibrant, the baby elephant playing with food becomes the warm, rusty centre of the image, framed by layers of fresh vegetation.
