Story Behind The Photograph – Catching Up With The Herd

I took this image in Chobe, Botswana, on a clear, sunny day. The herd had been feeding near the river and then started to move off together. Most of the elephants crossed the water in a steady line, but this youngster became distracted for a while.

When the others were already ahead, the calf suddenly realised he needed to catch up. In that instant, the baby elephant running through water launched himself forward, ears tucked back and trunk stretched out. He powered through the channel with short, determined strides, pushing waves in front of his legs and leaving a trail of ripples behind. The scene felt both funny and touching, because his urgency came from the simple desire not to be left behind.

Splash, Light And Young Energy

What I love here is the mix of movement and detail. Sunlight glints off the water, catching tiny droplets around his feet. His wrinkled skin shines against the blue of the channel and the green vegetation on the far bank. Although the body is small, his posture is full of intent, and the raised trunk adds a playful curve to the profile.

The background is soft and uncluttered, so the baby elephant running through water stands out clearly against the bands of blue and green.
