Mana Pools National Park is famous for its stunning riverine landscapes, and the view across the Zambezi to the Zambian escarpment is one of its most iconic. As the sun dips below the horizon, the light changes rapidly, painting the sky and water in incredible colours. This particular evening offered a breathtaking display of soft blues, purples, and oranges.

The smoke seen on the escarpment is a common sight at the end of the dry season. It’s a result of controlled burns, a traditional practice that clears old vegetation. This prepares the land for the new growth that will burst forth with the coming rains. It’s a powerful symbol of renewal and the cyclical nature of the African bush.

Story Behind the Photograph – Acacia Point Mana Pools

I made this photograph from the Zimbabwean side of the Zambezi River, looking towards the Zambian escarpment. It was late in the dry season, and the air was thick with the promise of rain, though none had fallen yet. The sun was setting, casting a warm glow over the water and sky.

I had positioned myself to include the distinctive Acacia Point, a cluster of trees that often serves as a landmark in Mana Pools. The challenge was to capture the vastness of the scene while also highlighting the subtle details of the light and the smoke. I waited for the perfect moment when the colours in the sky were at their most vibrant, and the reflection on the river was strongest. The layered blues of the escarpment, softened by the smoke, created a truly magical backdrop.
