Story Behind The Photograph – Early Morning In Mana Pools
This scene comes from an early morning on the Mana Pools floodplain. The river lay behind me, still hidden by mist. Overnight a hippo had left the water to feed, and now it was making its way back through the woodland. In Mana Pools hippos often walk under these big trees, but it still feels like a secret when you see one alone in the forest.
I watched from a distance as the hippo moved between the trunks. It paused for a moment, then chose a clear path across the open ground. The cool blue light wrapped around the trees and softened the background. I framed the scene so the hippo stayed small but clear, a single dark shape under the canopy. That is the moment you see here.
