Story Behind The Photograph – Boswell Elephant Print

Boswell is the most iconic elephant of Mana Pools and one of the biggest tuskers still roaming free. I created this Boswell elephant print on a quiet morning when the floodplain was soft with dust and early light.

Boswell is known for his unusual way of feeding. He rises onto his hind legs to reach the highest branches, while younger elephants wait below for the food he pulls down. Watching this huge bull balance so gracefully is one of the reasons I keep returning to Mana Pools.

On this particular day Boswell had just come out of the river. I was on foot in the sand, working from a low angle that Mana Pools makes possible. He walked straight toward me, completely relaxed, ears loose, trunk swinging in an easy rhythm. Even with that gentle body language, his size and those long, worn tusks filled the frame and gave this Boswell elephant print its strong, centred composition.

Quiet Authority On The Floodplain

What I love in this image is Boswell’s quiet authority. There is no charge and no drama, just a steady, confident walk toward the camera. The soft blue layers of the escarpment and the blurred winter‑thorn trees frame the Boswell elephant print without distraction, so all attention rests on his eyes, trunk and sweeping tusks.

For me, this print is a tribute to a gentle giant and a reminder of how fragile the future of Africa’s great tuskers has become. Standing with him on the open floodplain, I felt both very small and very privileged.
