Story Behind The Photograph – Waiting For The Moment

I had been watching this herd for a while as they moved across the open ground. The sun was dropping fast, and the sky turned a deep, rich orange. I wanted a clean, single silhouette against the sun, but the herd was large and tightly packed, which made it hard to isolate one animal.

As the light reached its peak, the herd bunched together. Then, suddenly, a bull mounted one of the cows. He lifted his head and shoulders clear of the mass of bodies and, for a few seconds, he stood higher than the rest. That was the moment I had been waiting for. The buffalo herd at sunset became a dark base under the bright disc of the sun, with the bull’s profile perfectly placed in the glow.

Silhouettes, Birds And Burning Light

This image is all about graphic shapes and intense colour. The lower half of the frame is filled with solid buffalo silhouettes, their backs and horns forming a rolling line. Above them, the sun burns bright and round, set against a sky that shifts from yellow near the sun to deep orange and red towards the horizon.

The mounted bull gives the scene a clear focal point. His lifted head and horns break the line of the herd and draw the eye. At the same time, birds cross the sky in front of the sun, adding movement and a lighter counterpoint to the heavy forms below. Layers of distant trees and the outline of the escarpment soften into haze, adding depth behind the buffalo herd at sunset without distracting from the strong foreground shapes.
