I created this lilac-breasted roller photo on a calm bushveld morning. The light was still soft, and the air already held a hint of heat. As I drove slowly along the track, I noticed a flash of turquoise and lilac on a nearby bush. A roller had just landed, an insect still clamped firmly in its beak. I stopped the vehicle at a gentle angle, making sure not to disturb the bird, and lifted my camera.

At first, the roller watched its surroundings carefully, head turning from side to side. Then it paused for a brief moment, perfectly still, with the insect held proudly like a prize. Because the background fell away into smooth colour and the branch curved so gracefully, I knew this was the frame I had hoped for.
