Story Behind The Photograph – Dust, Distance And Thirst

I made this image at Nxai Pans in Botswana, where elephants walk long distances across the open pans to reach the waterhole. In the dry season, each arrival feels urgent. Bulls appear on the horizon as small shapes and then grow larger, step by step, as they close the gap.

On this day several bulls reached the water at the same time. As they jostled for position, tempers rose. One elephant finished drinking and turned away just as another bull pushed closer. This bull swung his head, flared his ears and started forward in a fast, dusty stride. For a few seconds he came straight towards me, more focused on the rival behind than on anything else. That is the instant frozen here: a charging elephant under blue sky, full of energy and attitude.

Power, Posture And Dramatic Clouds

What I love in this scene is how the posture and sky work together. The bull’s front leg lifts, dust spills around his feet and his trunk hangs slightly to one side, giving a sense of weight and movement. His ears spread wide, making him look even larger and more determined.

Above him, streaks of white cloud stretch across a deep blue sky like brushstrokes, echoing the direction of his movement. Low trees on the horizon stay small, so the charging elephant under blue sky dominates the frame. The combination of dusty ground, clear light and dramatic clouds turns a simple walk to water into something almost cinematic.
