Story Behind The Photograph – Cheeky Young Cheetah Cub

This cheeky young cheetah cub is the same curious brother you met in the previous image, now pushing things a little further. On that Kalahari birthday morning we watched a cheetah mother with her two youngsters. While the mother rested, her son kept edging closer, full of confidence and play.

I stayed low in the grass and did not move. He decided to see how far he could go. Step by step he came nearer, eyes bright, body relaxed, enjoying the game. At one point he opened his mouth in this half‑snarl, half‑playful expression, as if to say, “Look how big and brave I am.”

In this frame the cheeky young cheetah cub fills the image, teeth showing, whiskers forward and spots glowing against the soft green background. The shallow depth of field keeps the mood gentle, even though his pose is bold.

Playful Courage

What I love in this photograph is the mix of courage and innocence. He is clearly testing boundaries, but there is no real aggression. It is pure, young curiosity. The low angle puts the viewer right in his path, which makes the encounter feel personal and immediate.
