Cheetah Cub Staying Close To Mother – Story Behind The Photograph

Near sunset I was driving out of Deception Pan when I noticed a jackal running back and forth and a group of oryx standing very still, all looking in the same direction. When I followed their gaze, I found a cheetah mother with three cubs lying between small yellow flowers in the grass.

The mother was relaxed, but her cubs reacted differently to all the attention from the oryx. One youngster sat up to watch them, clearly curious and alert. Another stretched out in the flowers. The smallest of the three stayed pressed in close to the mother, seeking safety and comfort. I could see in her body language that she was less at ease than her siblings.

In this frame the shy cub is lying near the centre, close to the mother’s body, while a bolder sibling sits upright a little farther away, framed by the soft shapes of Kalahari trees in the background. The foreground of flowers and blurred grass wraps them in a gentle, dreamlike haze.

Shy Heart Of The Litter

What I love about this image is how clearly it shows the different personalities within one family. The smallest cub keeps her distance from the outside world and stays nearest to the mother’s warmth. The more confident sibling lifts his head and looks toward the oryx and the jackal, already testing his courage. Together they tell a quiet story about dependence, trust and the first steps toward independence.

This cheetah cub staying close to mother fits beautifully with my other Deception Pan images of the same family. Hung together, they show the relaxed guardian, the watchful youngsters and, here, the shy heart of the litter.
