Cheetah Cub Watching Oryx – Story Behind The Photograph

This cheetah cub watching oryx belongs to the relaxed mother I found near Deception Pan. I had noticed a jackal running around and a group of oryx standing still, staring in one direction. Following their gaze, I discovered the family: a cheetah mother with three cubs lying between patches of yellow flowers near sunset.

While the mother stayed calm, her youngsters were more nervous. The oryx stood at a distance, clearly aware of the predators and unwilling to look away. In this moment one cub sat up, stretching his long neck above the shrubs, eyes fixed on the oryx. The rest of his body remains half‑hidden by the soft, green foreground.

The wide opening in front of him creates a dreamy frame of blurred leaves and flowers, while the background melts into muted Kalahari tones.

Young Vigilance

What I love in this image is the balance between softness and tension. The scene feels peaceful, yet you can sense the cub’s vigilance. His face is bright and focused, ears slightly forward, already learning to read the signals of other animals on the pan. The low angle places you at ground level, as if you are lying in the flowers beside him, sharing his view.
