You were driving out of Deception Pan in the Kalahari when the scene first unfolded. A jackal ran back and forth across the flat, dry pan. Nearby, oryx stood alert, staring in one direction. Their focus gave everything away.

On closer inspection you found her: a cheetah mother resting among flowers, lying low between small yellow blooms with her three cubs tucked nearby. The light was soft, close to sunset, and the pan felt wide and open. While the youngsters were a little nervous under the watchful eyes of the oryx, their mother seemed completely composed. She knew the distance, the angles and her own strength.
