Story Behind The Photograph – Cheetah Siblings On A Dirt Track

This photograph of cheetah siblings on a dirt track comes from the same Kalahari birthday morning. We had been following a cheetah mother and her two youngsters as they moved across the plains. While the mother stayed just out of frame, the youngsters grew more curious and bold.

Here, the braver brother sits in the open on the wet track. His sister tucks herself just behind his shoulder, using him as a shield while she studies us. She peeks out over his back, close enough that their spots and outlines blend into one another. Together they form a single, elegant shape in the centre of the frame.

In this moment the cheetah siblings on a dirt track show both their different characters and their close bond. He faces forward with calm confidence. She hides a little, but cannot resist looking out.

Brave Front, Shy Shadow

What I love in this image is the mix of protection and personality. The brother takes the brave front position, while his sister borrows his courage. The pale blue sky, soft green grasses and pale track keep the scene gentle and open, so the viewer’s eye goes straight to their faces.

This print pairs beautifully with the walking and hissing portraits of the brother, adding a quieter, more intimate view of their relationship.
