Although we often imagine Africa as hot and dry, mornings on the pans can feel surprisingly cold. On this day, a sharp wind swept across the open saltpans, carrying low clouds and a thin, silvery light. The meerkat family still had to feed, but they moved close to the ground, using the sparse grass for a little shelter.

This young suricate paused just in front of me, tucking itself down as the wind passed over its back. Its fur lifted slightly, ears flat, eyes focused on the empty horizon. For a few seconds it looked both tough and vulnerable at the same time. That mixture of resilience and cold, open space is what I wanted to hold in this cold meerkat photo print.
