In the wide Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana, meerkat families move together as they feed, rest, and keep watch. On this calm morning, I lay flat on the ground to photograph them. Suddenly, one curious meerkat pup noticed me. Instead of running away, it slowly came closer and sat down, watching me quietly.

For a few precious seconds, we simply looked at each other. The pup tilted its head, pushed its whiskers forward, and tried to decide what I might be. Meanwhile, the adults carried on digging and foraging behind it, trusting the sentries to call if there was danger. That short pause, with the youngster framed by grass and sky, ultimately became the moment I wanted to hold in this meerkat photo print.
