In Makgadikgadi Pans, meerkat pups learn by watching and copying the adults around them. They are cautious, but their curiosity quickly pulls them forward. On this morning, the family was busy near the burrow, moving between feeding, playing and keeping watch.

This youngster stepped onto a small rise and suddenly noticed me lying quietly at ground level. Instead of running, it stood upright, lifting one paw and staring with wide, shining eyes. For a few seconds it seemed to be working out exactly what I was. That mix of innocence, bravery and curiosity is what I wanted to hold in this curious little one print.
