Story Behind The Photograph – Curious Young Cheetah Close Up

This curious young cheetah close up shows the cheeky brother from the Kalahari birthday sighting. We had found a cheetah mother with her two youngsters. While the mother rested calmly in the grass, her son could not resist exploring.

I sat low in the sand and grass to meet them at eye level. The young male quickly noticed and began to edge closer. Step by step, he approached, head low, eyes wide, trying to understand this new shape in his world. His sister stayed further back, but he enjoyed the game.

In this frame the curious young cheetah close up fills the image with his face and shoulders. Fine green stems blur in front of him, while his amber eyes and dark tear marks stay perfectly sharp. The soft light and pastel tones keep the mood gentle, even as he comes boldly forward.

What I love in this photograph is his mix of boldness and youth. He is not yet a full hunter, but his personality already shines through.
