Story Behind The Photograph – Lone Bull In The Forest

In Mana Pools, old bulls often leave the breeding herds and spend their days in small bachelor groups or completely on their own. These “dagga boys” are famous for their short tempers. They live in thick cover and, unlike many other animals, they often give no clear warning before they charge.

I met this bull on foot in the woodland. He had drifted away from the floodplain and stood in a pool of soft light under the tall trees. The background fell into gentle blur, so all the focus stayed on the dagga boy buffalo portrait in front of me. As he watched, oxpeckers climbed over his back and along his horns, picking at ticks and scars. For a moment he stood square on, one leg slightly forward, and everything lined up for this portrait.
