The air was still and cool as the sun began to rise. Soon, its golden rays pierced through the canopy. A large herd of buffalo was already moving through the forest, foraging and stirring up the dry earth. The dust clouds they created were instantly transformed by the light, turning into glowing curtains that enveloped the trees and the animals.

Story Behind the Photograph – Mana Pools Buffalo

I made this photograph during a memorable morning walk in Mana Pools. We had set out early, hoping to catch the first light. As we approached a clearing in the albida forest, we heard the low rumbling of a large buffalo herd. Moving slowly and carefully, we found them just as the sun was breaking through the trees.

The scene was breathtaking. Buffalo were everywhere, and the air was thick with golden dust. I focused on the buffalo in the foreground, waiting for a moment when they were well-positioned and the light was just right. The challenge was to capture the scale of the herd while also highlighting the individual animals and the incredible atmospheric conditions.
