As the first light approached, a light wind began to lift a fine layer of sand from the ground. I knew that if the oryx moved through this dust at the right moment, the scene could change completely.
I positioned myself downwind and waited. For a while, nothing happened. Then, almost without sound, two gemsbok stepped into view. They paused and listened, completely at ease in the semi‑desert. Because the sun had just broken the horizon, the dust between us lit up and turned to molten gold. I framed the closer animal as the main subject and kept the second oryx in the frame to hint at the unseen herd.
There was only a very small window where everything aligned: the height of the dust, the angle of the light and the spacing of the animals. After a few seconds, they moved on and the magic faded.
