Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant At Sunset In The Forest

I made this image in Mana Pools at the end of a long day on foot. The sun had already dropped behind the Zambezi escarpment, but its last light still poured through the trees. The canopy caught the glow and turned it into deep golds, oranges and soft pinks that layered across the horizon.

A lone elephant stood near the edge of the clearing, dwarfed by the size of the trees around him. He paused to feed, tail relaxed, body calm. Because the light was coming from behind, he became a gentle silhouette against the bright sky. The forest felt quiet and still, as if everything was slowing down with the fading light.

Colour In The Sky, Shadows On The Ground

What I love in this scene is the contrast between the rich colour above and the soft shadows below. The elephant at sunset in the forest is small in the frame, yet he anchors the whole composition. Dark trunks and branches create strong shapes, while pockets of green leaves still hold a little light.

The ground is simple and open, broken only by a few fallen branches and stumps. As a result, your eye moves from the warm band of sunset sky, down through the glowing canopy, and finally rests on the elephant standing quietly underneath. The photograph feels peaceful and contemplative, like the last deep breath before night.
