Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant At Sunset Mana Pools

I photographed this elephant at sunset in Mana Pools as the light was dropping fast over the Zambezi River. The sun hung low above the Zambian escarpment, turning the sky into deep layers of orange and red. Fred Astaire, one of the famous bulls that stands on his hind legs to reach for higher branches, had come down to the water to feed in the shallows.

He moved slowly through the glowing reflections, pulling up mouthfuls of grass while the river burned around his legs. In the distance hippos surfaced and disappeared again, small silhouettes against the last light on the water. It was such a peaceful moment, yet full of quiet drama as the day gave way to night over Mana Pools and Zambia beyond.

Fred Astaire In The Zambezi River

What I love about this image is the balance between the strong, graphic sunset and the gentle shape of Fred Astaire in the foreground. His dark silhouette anchors the scene while the reflection of the sun draws your eye straight towards him. The Zambian escarpment forms a soft, hazy backdrop, adding depth and a sense of scale to the vast river landscape.

The warm reds and oranges of the sky and water contrast beautifully with the cooler shadows, creating a moody, cinematic feeling. Even though this bull is known for his spectacular displays on two legs, here he feels quiet and contemplative, simply enjoying his evening meal in the fading light.
