Story Behind The Photograph – Elephants At Sunset

I made this image at the end of the day in Nxai Pans, Botswana. The sun had just dipped below the horizon, leaving the sky filled with deep colour and the pans wrapped in warm dust. Elephants were still coming and going from the waterhole, moving as quiet shadows across the open ground.

Two bulls paused near each other on a slight ridge. Instead of challenging one another, they stepped close and lifted their trunks. For a brief moment the tips touched, forming a gentle curve between them. From my position, their bodies lined up perfectly with the glowing sky, creating a clear elephant entwined silhouette above the dark ground.

Connection In A Simple Elephant Entwined Silhouette

What I like most here is the sense of connection. The pose feels calm and balanced rather than aggressive. One elephant leans in from the left, the other from the right, and their trunks meet in the middle like a handshake between old friends.

Because the light is so low, there is no detail inside the silhouettes. Your eye reads only the outlines: legs, backs, heads, and that single curve where the trunks join. The horizon runs low in the frame, leaving a large area of smooth sky, so the elephant entwined silhouette becomes the clear focus of the image. A faint puff of dust around their feet adds a soft, hazy base without distracting from the shapes above.
