Story Behind The Photograph – Last Pink Light In Chobe

I made this image in Chobe, Botswana, just after the sun had dipped below the horizon. The sky still held a band of colour, and the river caught every tone. As the light faded, a small elephant family stepped into the channel and began to cross.

The leading adult moved carefully, feeling the depth with each step, while the younger elephants followed in single file. Some of the calves were almost fully submerged, with only backs and trunks breaking the surface. Because the daylight was almost gone, their bodies turned into clean dark shapes, and the river reflected the last pink light like liquid glass. The moment felt quiet and intimate, as if the day was giving them a gentle farewell.

Silhouettes, Reflections And Gentle Movement

What I love in this scene is the rhythm. The line of elephants creates a slow curve through the frame, and each step makes a small ripple that disturbs the smooth reflection. Warm colour in the water contrasts with the dark silhouettes, so the elephant family crossing the river at sunset stands out clearly without losing the soft mood.
