Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant In The Burning Sky

I made this image at a Nxai Pans waterhole near the end of the day. The worst heat had gone, so animals moved slowly in and out of the scene. As the sun neared the horizon, the light grew richer and more dramatic.

One elephant walked between the water and the sinking sun. Dust rose around his legs as he moved. Then the sun slipped through a gap in the clouds. Beams of light poured down and turned the entire view into a sheet of orange and red. A bird crossed the frame at just the right moment, while other animals lingered in the haze behind him, giving scale and context to the elephant in the burning sky.

Drama In Dust, Light And Reflection

This image is all about strong shapes and simple, powerful colour. The elephant stands in deep shadow, his curved back and trunk clearly outlined against the bright sky. Trees on the horizon draw a dark line across the frame, and clouds above catch the last light, adding texture to the burning sky.

Dust glows like fire around the animals. At the same time, the still water in front of the elephant reflects the colours of the sunset. Small stones at the edge of the pool add texture and lead your eye towards the main figure. The bird in mid‑flight adds movement, so the elephant in the burning sky feels part of a living, changing moment rather than a static silhouette.
