Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant In The Forest

I created this photograph in the Mana Pools forest on a quiet, hazy morning. The famous blue haze lay between the trunks, softening the distant trees and giving the woodland a dreamy, layered look. We were on foot, moving slowly and stopping often, watching how the elephants used the open spaces between the tall trees.

One bull stepped into a clearing where a low branch arched across the scene. As he walked forward, his back line and raised trunk followed the same curve as the tree. Because the light was gentle and the background soft, his dark shape stood out clearly against the blue haze. For a moment it felt as if the forest itself was guiding his path.

Framing The Elephant With Trees

When we photograph an elephant in the forest here, we move around a lot on foot. We look for strong lines, open gaps and natural frames. In this scene the trees form a broad arch, and the elephant fits neatly inside it. The fallen trunk in the foreground adds a quiet base, while the grass and dust lead your eye back towards the animal.

The cool blue haze between the trees separates the different layers of the woodland. As a result, the elephant in the forest stays the clear focus, even though there is a lot of detail in the scene. Your gaze travels from the foreground logs, to the moving bull, and then deeper into the forest where more shapes fade into soft tones.
