Story Behind The Photograph – Dust, Silence And Sunset

I made this image at the end of a long, dry day in Nxai Pans, Botswana. The sun was already touching the horizon and the pans lay quiet, holding the heat of the day. A thin layer of dust hung in the air, catching every ray of light.

As the colours deepened, a single elephant moved away from the main group and paused near a shallow pool. He stood still for a moment, trunk relaxed, as if listening to the last sounds of the evening. Behind him, the sun flared one final time and sent beams through the dust, creating a halo around his legs. That is the instant captured here: an elephant in the last light, caught between day and night.

Silhouette, Reflections And Soft Rays

What I enjoy most in this scene is the simplicity. The elephant’s outline is crisp and clean against the glowing sky. You can see the gentle curve of his trunk and the solid weight of his body, yet no detail distracts from the overall mood.

In the foreground, the pool mirrors small fragments of the sky and the shape of his legs, adding a quiet balance to the composition. Soft rays stretch towards the water, guiding your eye from the bright horizon down to the reflective surface.
