Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant In Zambezi River

I photographed this elephant in Zambezi River while we were moving slowly by boat along the channel at Mana Pools. The morning was clear, the sky soft blue, and the water almost mirror calm. A young bull had chosen a low island in the river where the grasses grow thick and sweet.

We cut the engine and drifted closer. Because we gave him space, he stayed relaxed and kept feeding, one foot resting forward as he pulled mouthfuls of grass from the shallows. Every now and then he lifted his head to watch us, ears open and curious, then went back to his meal. It felt like we were sharing a quiet moment in his dining room on the water.

What I love in this image is the balance between power and playfulness. The young bull faces the camera square on, with broad ears and clean tusks catching the light. At the same time, the lifted front foot and trailing grasses give the scene an easy, almost casual mood.

The cool blues of the sky and river contrast gently with the warm tones of his skin. Behind him, the far bank of the Zambezi forms a soft horizontal band that anchors the composition. As a result, your eye moves naturally from the foreground reeds, through the elephant in Zambezi River, and out towards the distant forest. It is a simple scene, yet it holds the feeling of space, light and freedom that defines Mana Pools.
