Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant, Floodplains And Escarpment

I made this image on the open floodplains of Mana Pools as the day was ending. The sun was already low above the Zambian escarpment, and the light had turned deep orange. As the temperature dropped, the valley relaxed, and an elephant moved quietly out from the woodland to feed on the floodplain.

I stepped back to include not only the animal, but also the trees, river edge and distant hills. In this way, the elephant on the floodplains at sunset becomes part of a much larger scene. He stands under the shade of the trees while the escarpment rises behind him in gentle layers of blue and mauve. The sun rests near the horizon, and its glow runs across the sky like a soft veil.

Layers Of Light, Trees And Distant Hills

What I enjoy most here is the sense of space. The elephant is small in the frame; however, that choice emphasises the scale of the landscape. Dark silhouettes of trees anchor the foreground, while the floodplain stretches out in a thin band towards the river. Beyond that, the Zambian escarpment forms a soft, solid wall that holds the light.

Because the sunset is high in the composition, your eye first meets the bright disc of the sun. Then it moves down through the warm sky, along the line of trees, and finally rests on the elephant on the floodplains at sunset. The scene feels calm and balanced, as if time has slowed for a moment while the last light fades.
