Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant Patriarch Of The Forest

I took this image on foot in Mana Pools, and from the start I knew Boswell would give me a powerful portrait. He was moving through the woodland with his usual slow, decisive stride, so I circled ahead along the same route. That way, when he came forward, he would be facing me, perfectly centred in the natural tunnel formed by the branches.

As the afternoon went on, light filtered through the canopy in gentle patches and caught the dust on the ground. Because of this, the distant trees turned into layers of blue and green that softened the background. When the elephant patriarch of the forest approached, his long tusks caught the warm light, yet his eyes stayed calm and focused. There was no rush and no tension; instead, there was only the steady presence of an elephant who knows every path and tree in his home valley.

Young Bull Following The Patriarch

Behind Boswell walked a younger bull, and his body language told a different story. He kept a respectful distance, yet he matched the older bull’s path step for step. He knows that when the elephant patriarch of the forest pulls down branches and pods, there will be food to share. In this way, he gains both access to food and a quiet lesson in how to move through this landscape.

The two elephants echo each other’s shapes, so old strength leads young curiosity. At the same time, the arching branches above and the fallen limbs on the ground frame their route and guide the viewer’s eye. Your gaze first meets the foreground logs, then moves to Boswell in the lead, and finally drifts back to the younger bull and the soft layers of trees beyond. As a result, the whole scene feels like a gentle procession through the woods.
