Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant Reaching For Pods

I photographed this elephant reaching for pods in Mana Pools during the dry season. Food was scarce on the ground, so the young bull moved from tree to tree, searching for the last nutritious acacia albida pods high above his head. When he stopped in a shaft of warm light and rose up on his toes, I knew I was watching something quietly spectacular.

He stretched his trunk as far as it would go, tusks framing the effort, dust soft around his feet. For a few heartbeats he seemed almost weightless, balanced between earth and sky, completely focused on this small pocket of abundance. Moments like this show me how resourceful elephants are, and how finely tuned they are to every tree and season in Mana Pools.

What I love in this scene is the combination of strength and elegance. The young elephant reaching up feels powerful, yet his pose is almost balletic as he pushes higher towards the pods. The hazy background of trees and soft colours of the dry season wrap him in a gentle atmosphere, so the image feels peaceful rather than harsh.

The long vertical lines of his body and trunk lead your eye straight from the dusty ground into the glowing canopy. Layers of soft blues, greens and golds in the forest behind create depth, while the warm foreground ties the image back to the parched earth of Mana Pools.
