Story Behind The Photograph – Elephant Reaching Up Mana Pools

I photographed this elephant reaching up in Mana Pools on a quiet morning, when the first light slipped gently through the forest. Fred Astaire, a well known bull here, moved slowly between the trunks while the ground was still cool and dusty.

He chose a massive tree with strong roots and beautiful lines. Then he braced his feet on the slope, leaned his body into the trunk and stretched his trunk as high as he could to pull down fresh leaves. For a few seconds he held the pose almost completely still, tusks resting along the bark while leaves rustled above his head. Because the air was so calm, the whole scene felt as if time had slowed around him.

What draws me to this image is the clear diagonal line of Fred Astaire’s body as it rises along the tree. The rough texture of the trunk and roots contrasts with the smooth curve of his side. At the same time, the blue and green haze in the background softens everything behind him, so your eye stays on the elephant reaching up.

Warm browns in the foreground anchor the scene. Meanwhile, the cooler colours behind add depth without becoming a distraction. Your gaze travels from the dusty earth to his powerful shoulders, then up his trunk into the leaves he is feeding on. As a result, you not only see a feeding elephant, you also feel the quiet effort and concentration of this wild bull.
