Story Behind The Photograph – Smelling Water At Sunset

I made this image late in the day during the dry season. Elephants had been walking in from far across the pans, heading for the last reliable water. As they came closer you could see the pace change. Some slowed, some broke into a faster stride, and the tension around the waterhole rose.

This bull had already covered a long distance. When he reached the last open stretch, he lifted his trunk into the air to test the wind. He could smell the water now and began to move faster, dust swirling around his feet. The low sun slid behind him at just the right moment, so the elephant rushing to the waterhole became a strong silhouette with a halo of light around his back.

Energy, Dust And Raised Trunk

What stands out here is the mix of power and light. The lifted trunk tells you exactly what he is doing: searching for the scent of water and the rest of the herd. One front leg is raised mid‑step, showing his forward drive. Fine dust hangs in the air and catches the sunlight, softening the lower part of the frame.

The background is made of simple layers: dark foreground, a soft band of distant ground, then a wide, glowing sky. These clean bands of tone keep the focus on the elephant rushing to the waterhole, while small birds in the distance add a sense of scale and open space.
