Story Behind The Photograph – Evening At The Waterhole

I made this elephant sunset silhouette at the end of a hot day in Nxai Pans, Botswana. The sun had just slipped below the horizon and the sky glowed with deep colour. Elephants were still coming to drink, crossing the open pans in steady lines before night. As the light faded, detail on their skin disappeared and only clear silhouettes remained.

One bull stepped up on slightly higher ground and paused. Another elephant moved behind him at the same time. From my position, the pair overlapped and melted together. Their bodies formed a single elephant sunset silhouette, framed by the band of intense orange sky.

Two Elephants, One Silhouette

What I enjoy most here is the quiet surprise. At first you only see the big bull. Then your eye adjusts and you notice the second elephant. Its lighter body shows through the gap beneath the bull’s belly, legs and trunk echoing his pose. Because the two shapes overlap so neatly, they feel like one design rather than two animals.

A third elephant bends to drink low on the left edge, adding balance without breaking the clean line of silhouettes. The horizon runs low across the frame, leaving a wide area of sky so the elephant sunset silhouette stays the clear focus of the scene.
