Story Behind The Photograph – Matusadona And Lake Kariba

I made this image in Matusadona National Park, on the Zimbabwean side of Lake Kariba. When the dam was built and the valley flooded, many trees drowned where they stood. Decades later their bare trunks still reach out of the water and along the shoreline, forming the famous “petrified forest” of Kariba.

As the sun went down, the wind dropped and the lake turned calm. Soft colour spread across the sky, shifting from deep blue to violet and warm pink. An elephant walked slowly through the drowned forest, stopping to feed on the strip of grass between the trees and the water. I stepped back to include the full line of trunks, the lake and the distant hills, so the elephant with petrified trees became just one part of a quiet, spacious scene.

Layers Of Water, Sky And Drowned Forest

What I like most here is the sense of depth and stillness. Dark silhouettes of the petrified trees stand in the foreground, some leaning at odd angles, others reaching straight up like thin fingers. Behind them, Lake Kariba lies in a smooth, blue band that catches the last light. Further back, low hills sit in soft shadow, and above everything, the sky glows with delicate sunset colour.

The elephant with petrified trees is small but clear, its rounded shape and gentle posture contrasting with the thin, straight trunks around it. Because there is so much open space, the scene feels peaceful rather than crowded. Your eye can wander from tree to tree, out across the lake and back to the elephant quietly grazing on the shore.
