Story Behind The Photograph – Elephants Crossing Zambezi In Mana Pools

I took this image as we were just arriving in Mana Pools by boat. The park lay ahead of us, and the river was bright under a clear blue sky. A small group of elephants had chosen the same moment to cross the Zambezi. They were heading for a low island where the grasses grow thick along the edge.

We slowed the boat and watched in silence. One by one, the elephants crossed the deeper channel, then pushed up the gentle slope towards the island. The bull in front threw his trunk into the air, splashing through the shallows with obvious pleasure. Water streamed from his skin as he stepped onto firmer ground, and for a moment he seemed to rise out of the river like a living sculpture.

What I love in this scene is the feeling of movement and release. The elephants crossing Zambezi are still half surrounded by water, yet the promise of food and dry ground is already there. The lead bull’s raised trunk and powerful stride show his excitement, while the others follow closely behind, almost touching his flank.

The cool blues of the river and sky frame the warm browns of the elephants. Behind them, the green line of the far bank anchors the horizon and reminds you how wide the Zambezi is at Mana Pools. As a result, your eye travels from the splashing foreground, along the curve of the bull’s back, and into the softer shapes of the forest. The whole image feels fresh, open and full of life.
