Story Behind The Photograph – Elephants Entwined In Mana Pools

I created this image on the open floodplain of Mana Pools, close to the Zambezi River. The air was still and overcast, so the colours of the Zambian escarpment across the river fell into soft blues and mauves. On the sand in front of us, two young bulls approached each other with slow, measured steps.

Instead of clashing hard, they eased together. One lifted his trunk, the other turned his head, and soon their tusks and trunks were wrapped around each other. The elephants entwined, leaning in and shifting weight from foot to foot. Their movements were controlled and almost tender, more like a slow dance than a serious fight.

Testing Strength, Not Fighting

What I love in this scene is the balance between power and friendship. The elephants entwined clearly test each other’s strength, yet their ears stay relaxed and their bodies soft. There is no dust, no rush, just contact and quiet pressure.

The composition is simple and clean. The two bulls stand side by side in the centre of the frame, mirrored against each other. Behind them, the Zambian escarpment and riverine forest form gentle horizontal bands that echo the line of the floodplain. As a result, your attention stays on the curve of their trunks and the meeting point of their tusks.
