Story Behind The Photograph – Elephants Playfighting In The Forest

I made this image in the Mana Pools forest on a cool, slightly misty morning. The air was full of fine dust and moisture, so the light slipped through the canopy and settled low to the ground. As a result, the spaces between the trees turned blue and the woodland felt like a quiet stage.

Two young bulls met in the open and began to spar. They stepped close, lifted their trunks and pressed their tusks together. However, their movements stayed slow and relaxed, more like a test of balance than a real fight. There was no rush, no aggression, only practice and play. The elephants playfighting in the forest seemed to enjoy the contact as they turned gently around each other.

The Waterbuck, The Impala And The Stage Of Trees

What makes this scene special is not only the elephants, but also their audience. On the left, a waterbuck stands next to an anthill, watching the action from the edge of the frame. Between the two bulls, a single impala appears, perfectly placed like a small judge keeping an eye on the rules. These details add humour and a sense of story to the photograph.

The tall trees arch above everything, creating depth and structure. Dark trunks and branches in the foreground frame the lighter band of haze where the elephants playfighting in the forest stand. Further back, more trees fade into soft blue tones. The ground is simple and open, so your eye travels from the waterbuck, across the sparring bulls and impala, and then deeper into the woodland.
