Story Behind The Photograph – Evening At The Nxai Pans Waterhole

I made this image late in the day. It was at a busy waterhole on Nxai Pans, Botswana. As the sun dropped towards the horizon, game drifted in from every direction. Elephants, zebras, and antelope all shared the same precious water.

Two elephants approached each other slowly. They paused. Their trunks stretched forward in a brief greeting. At that moment, the sun slipped behind a band of cloud. It sent shafts of light down through the gaps. This turned the dust into a soft orange haze. The zebras in the background stayed almost motionless. Their shapes were just visible through the glow. Meanwhile, the elephants touching trunks at sunset became the clear focal point of the scene.
