Story Behind The Photograph – Elephants Walking In The Blue Forest

I made this image in the Mana Pools forest during a warm, hazy morning. The air was heavy with moisture and dust, so the light filtered through the canopy and settled low to the ground. As the haze thickened, the spaces between the trees turned blue and the forest began to look like a painted stage.

A small group of elephants appeared in the distance and walked slowly across the open ground. They moved in and out of the bands of haze, sometimes clear and sometimes almost hidden. I stayed back and used the nearest trees as a dark frame, letting the elephants walking in the blue forest appear as soft shapes in the middle of the scene.

Layers Of Trees, Haze And Elephants

What I love here is the strong sense of depth. Dark trunks and branches fill the foreground, while the elephants walking in the blue forest stand in a lighter band of mist behind them. Further back, more trees fade into pale tones until they almost disappear.

The ground is simple and dry, with only a few logs and mounds to break the surface. Because of this, your eye moves from the front shadows, through the elephants, and then deeper into the woodland. The cool blues of the haze contrast with the warmer browns of the trunks, giving the image a quiet, mysterious mood.
