Story Behind The Photograph – Young Cheetah Portrait In The Grass

This young cheetah portrait in the grass comes from a special Kalahari morning. We had found a cheetah mother with two youngsters. The mother rested low in the grass, calm and confident. However, the young cheetahs were full of curiosity and energy.

To get closer to their eye level, I sat down in the sand and grass beside the vehicle. From there the scene felt very intimate. The youngsters kept lifting their heads, checking the wind and looking straight at me. Slowly they came closer, always pausing to study the strange shape on the ground.

In this frame one young cheetah stands tall, almost floating in the pale grass. His body disappears into the soft foreground, while his face and eyes stay perfectly sharp. The clean blue sky and gentle green tones give the portrait a quiet, timeless mood. For me, this image holds the purest memory of that birthday encounter.

Quiet Confidence On The Plains

What I love here is the balance between youth and confidence. The cheetah already has the long, elegant build of a future sprinter, yet his expression is open and gentle. Because the foreground is so soft, your eye goes straight to his face and then slowly discovers the rest of his body hidden in the grass.
